A digital support for the testing and documentation processes of substances in the pharmacies laboratory
The goal of this semester project was to create a user centered solution for a local craft that helps to enhance their work process. We chose to cooperate with a pharmacy.
With the help of research methods we got insights into the processes and structures of a pharmacy. We dealt with the work processes in the laboratory, especially the testing of substances. Substances are the starting material for the production of ointments, creams, etc. and must be tested for their identity before further processing.
We were able to identify some pains in the steps that a pharmaceutical laboratory assistant (PTA) performs before, during and after the testing procedure.
Many of the pains related to testing procedures of substances showed up as the biggest problem area. Therefore we created a new concept for the testing of substances.
How might we simplify the necessary steps before and after the test procedure so that the PTA can save time and minimize sources of error.
The main focus was to structure and visualize all the steps while preparing and performing the testing procedure. For this we created a tablet application that guides the PTA through all necessary steps.
In order to find the test method to be used for the substance more quickly, the barcode on the packaging of the substance is scanned. The PTA receives all important information about the substance, as well as a list of all materials for the test procedure and safety instructions on the substances and chemicals.
The PTA does not need books and finished reports, just a tablet that runs the digital laboratory assistant. The PTA is guided step by step through the test procedure and supported visually. The record is handled by the assistant and only the results of the testing procedure have to be entered.
After finishing the test procedure, the laboratory assistant gives information on the disposal of chemicals and safety instructions. The record of the testing procedure is created automatically and can be viewed after completion.
